The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: Super Mario Bros. 2 NES Tribute

The Super Mario Galaxy movie was released at the beginning of this month and what could I say? I loved the film from the beginning to the end. Not on the fact this movie in particular was linked to Super Mario Galaxy, or the many hidden Nintendo Easter eggs (badum!), but on how Super Mario Bros. 2 NES & the characters of was featured. Let's talk about it!

If you didn't know, one of my favourite NES games is Super Mario Bros. 2, "sus" Mario game of the series that is in fact just Japan's Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic in disguise.

What makes Super Mario Bros. 2 so fun is how you could play as either Mario, Luigi, Toad or Princess Toadstool. As a child I always chose Princess Toadstool because of her levitating/floating abilities, which made adventuring through the world of "Subcon" far more fun in my opinion. Everything about this game is a solid 10/10 from me, so to see the latest film feature them as part of the plot involving Bowser Jr. certainly made my day; perhaps even my life.

SPOILER ALERT

Princess Peach and Toad make their way after following Ukiki the Monkey, who deceived Toad with their cuteness, stealing his backpack in the process while they were at Gateway Galaxy. While running after Ukiki, they end up underground, which is a clever reference to Level 1-2 with blue hues in the original Super Mario Bros, into an extravagant neon city full of buzzing night life. Princess Peach and Toad upon following Ukiki further, soon then encounter Wart & his "crew" of bosses (Birdo, Mouser and Clawgrip) from SMB2.

Birdo

Mouser

Clawgrip

Wart

When Princess Peach confronts Wart about the whereabouts of Bowser Jr. & Princess Rosalina, the villains attack in the same way they do in the original game, then Wart unleashes an entire army of Ninjis once Princess Peach defeats them, which was also a great surprise.

Ninji

We get a very impressive fight scene featuring Peach & Toad working together as a team. Wart has a turnip thrown into his mouth in true SMB2 style (if you know, you know) and is defeated. Toad of course also gets his backpack back too.

Brief snippet of the specific scene.

Some things just never change eh Peach?

Personally I think Super Mario Bros. 2 is highly underrated and deserves more love. So to see a handful of villainous characters from the game in this specific part of the film and it was a solid 10/10.

Thank you!
